The Zulu meaning of the word Ubuntu is “I am because we are, therefore, because we are I am,” giving witness to the fact that we exist through our relationships with others.
The Sankofa Bird of Ghana is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. Thus, the Akan believe the past serves as a guide for planning the future. To the Akan, it is this wisdom in learning from the past which ensures a strong future.
Together with Hasshan Batts, we’ll explore the idea that to be truly effective, our systems work must be rooted in our interdependence as well as an examination of the past. We will explore the role of relationships, self reflective practices and systems change in healing from individual, collective and organizational trauma.
