Webinar: Māori Future Making: An Indigenous Approach to Social Innovation

July 27, 2021
2:00 pm - 3:30 pm Pacific US
5:00 pm - 6:30 pm Eastern US

July 28, 2021

9:00 am - 10:30 am NZST

This session will explore social innovation from an indigenous perspective. Efforts to address inequities facing indigenous communities often privilege the cultural perspectives, processes and priorities of the coloniser. This session will work with indigenous practitioners from a Māori social innovation lab from Aotearoa (New Zealand) and how they seek to use indigenous innovation processes to fix broken Western systems that don’t work for their communities. This is their story of how reclaiming the past can help make a better future.

**This is a ticketed event for which all donations will benefit the work of Turtle Island Institute, an Indigenous social innovation think and do tank - a teaching lodge - enabling transformative change.

Eruera is Executive Director for Tokona te Raki: Māori Futures Collective, an indigenous design and innovation lab based under the mana of Ngāi Tahu. Our purpose is to provide next-gen solutions powered by rangatahi Māori. We employ, train and support rangatahi through an apprenticeship in changing the world, equipping them with future-focused skills, and honing them through real-world projects. Over time we hope to build an army of Rangatahi Future-makers who combine the audacity of youth with leading-edge research and innovation techniques to tackle the grand challenges of our time.

Our young team of researchers blend big data and rangatahi voice to understand where change is needed most and identify what changes will make the biggest impact. Our insights are complimented by a mātauranga Māori-based design process we use to make solutions and test them in the real-world.  This is how we aim to create the future we believe in.
