Join this community session to share the journey of a brave group of women who found that the well-being of a community is a powerful and fertile way to face and respond to an ever-changing environment. Learn how saving a mangrove forest reconnected an entire community and reshaped our notion and conviction to build a system that produces wellness and ensures a generous future.

We will reflect on the role of women's leadership in systemic transformation toward well-being in conversation with Liliana Gutiérrez, Executive Director of the Mexican Initiative for Oceans and Coasts, and Martha García, General Coordinator of Las Guardianas del Conchalito.

By the end of the webinar participants will:

  • Deepen understanding of the significance of community well-being in addressing environmental challenges.

  • Learn about the influence of effective leadership in fostering systemic transformation.

  • Reflect on the importance of environmental conservation for a sustainable future.

  • Explore strategies for enhancing community resilience and leadership.

**There is no fee to participate in this special event. We invite you to donate to benefit the work of Las Guardianas del Estero El Conchalito, who believe that protecting the ocean and its sustainable use is not only necessary to ensure the world's economic prosperity but also a moral imperative.

She is a graduate fellow from the Academy for Systems Change and a National Geographic Explorer. Currently, Liliana leads a team for a national initiative to uplift the place that coasts and seas have in the political and policy agenda by creating a social base for these ecosystems.

Martha Garcia

Las Guardianas del Conchalito, General Coordinator

Martha García is a founding member of OPRE (Fishermen Organization to Recover La Ensenada), where she sits on the board. Martha's leadership in her organization helped raise awareness of gender equity issues in fisheries and fisheries restoration. Together with 13 other women, they contained poaching in their lagoon, establishing a 24/7 communitarian surveillance program. This was the origin of what now is a strong women's collective named Guardianas del Conchalito.

From its beginning acting against packing until now, they have developed a unique restoration and protection program that is rooted in the certainty that it will only be through happy and fair communities that we will be able to face the challenges of climate change and nature’s degradation. Thanks to Martha's perseverance and commitment, the Federal Mexican Government granted women of El Manglito co-management of an estuary to protect mangrove forests and to promote nature-based tourism as an alternative source of income for their families. Las Guardians have just initiated the first mangrove nursery in la Paz. They are also sustainable oyster producers and, inside the community, strong promoters of well-being for children and young people.
